Pavan Kumar Panchavati MD  Current President

Dr. Pavan Panchavati MD, MPH, SFHM, FAAAFP is a Hospital Medicine Physician at Huntsville Hospital. He has over 16 years of experience in the field of medicine. He graduated from Mahadevappa Rampure Medical College , India. He then completed the University of Alabama at Birmingham's Family Medicine Residency Program. He has earned numerous awards in medicine and currently sits on the Education Committee for the Society of Hospital Medicine. Also, he serves as a Clinical Associate Professor for UAB. He is the current President of The Alabama Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (aAPI).

Dr. Tejanand Gowtham Mulpur, MD FAAN is a consultant Neurologist in Huntsville, practicing for over 28 years. He is the Medical Director of the Neurodiagnostics lab and a senior member of the Stroke team at Huntsville Hospital system, a regional referral center with over 1000 beds. He worked in various committees, held several positions including Madison County Medical Society, Alabama Association of Physicians of Indian Origin and Guntur Medical College Alumni of North America. He worked as the regional director of National AAPI (American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin). He published papers and lectured in Several CME events in USA and abroad. He is on the faculty of University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) as a clinical Associate Professor in Neurology at Huntsville Regional Campus. He was the ALS and MDA clinic director and instrumental in getting the only certified ALS clinic in the state of Alabama to Huntsville.

Dr. Dibyajiban Mahapatra MD

Dr Dibyajiban Mahapatra is an Internist , who started his pvt Practice at Huntsville since 1998. He was a pvt faculty member at UAB Huntsville campus for 6 years . He has been at the Board of Trustees at HCCNA for 3 years. He was the aAPI President for 2 years, 2018-19. & Regional Director of National AAPI for the year 2020. He is involved in various charitable activities locally & Nationally.He is married with two children and enjoys outdoor activities.



Dr. Shashi Kumar is Past President of Alabama Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (aAPI) and Alabama Society of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ASAAI). He is board certified by the American Board of Allergy and Immunology. His post-graduate training includes specialization in Pediatrics in Birmingham, Alabama and Allergy-Immunology at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center and National Jewish Medical Center in Denver, Colorado. He is currently practicing in Huntsville for the past 25 years. He served as a Major in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Army and was Chief of Allergy Clinical Immunology Clinic while stationed at 67th Combat Support Hospital in Wuerzburg, Germany. Early in his career, he was Chief of Pediatrics at Fox Army Medical Center on Redstone Arsenal for 4 years. Dr. Kumar has given numerous national and local presentations on allergy and asthma. He is married to Kavita and has two adult twin daughters, Meena and Nisha.

Dr. Jitesh Kar, MD

Jitesh Kar, MD, is a board-certified, fellowship-trained neurologist who provides exceptional care to his patients at the Neurology Institute of Huntsville in Huntsville, Alabama. Dr. Kar specializes in adult neurology, really enjoys diagnostic neurology, and has a special interest and fellowship training in neuromuscular diseases.

Dr. Kar completed his Bachelor of Science in Medicine and Surgery at Grant Medical College & J.J. Hospital in Mumbai. He then pursued his Masters in Public Health at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, before undertaking his internship in internal medicine residency at New York Medical College/Metropolitan Hospital in New York City where he was awarded as "The resident with the best communication and interpersonal skills". Dr. Kar completed a residency in Neurology at the University of Texas Medical Center at Houston, where he served as the chief resident where he received multiple prestigious awards including “Frank M. Yatsu award for Excellence in Clinical Neurology”, “The Best Resident as a Teacher”, "Recipient of Arnold P. Gold Foundation Award for Resident Excellence in Humanism and Teaching for 2013 & 2014".

Dr. Kar served as the president of Alabama American Association of Indian Physicians from 2015 to 2017. He was one of the youngest presidents. As a president he raised $3000 for community free clinics. He played an active role in organizing the "Talat Aziz Night" fundraising event for the Houston Hurricane and Leukemia Lymphoma Society and raised $80,000. Dr. Kar started medical students and residents posters sections under the Alabama Chapter to encourage young training physicians research and scientific activity.

Dr. Kar served as the Regional Director of South East Central Regional for American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin from 2017 to 2019. As a regional director, he actively participated in national level meetings and worked actively on young physicians issues of visa and Green Card Backlog.


Tarak Vasavada, MD is a Medical Director of Huntsville Hospital Behavior Health Services. He recently retired as a professor and regional chair of psychiatry at UAB Huntsville campus. After obtaining MBBS and MD in Psychiatry from Baroda Medical College, India, Dr. Vasavada did his psychiatry residency from SUNY Upstate Medical College Syracuse. He has won numerous teaching awards and is also a distinguished fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He was the president of the Alabama Association of Indian Physicians in 2009-10. He served as president of Alabama Psychiatrist Physician’s Association from 2016-18. He is currently Treasurer for the Indo American Psychiatric Association and board member of Madison County Medical Society for the last 13 years. He is also a board member for national association of 15,000 physicians from India called Association of Physicians of Indian origin. His areas of interest include medical teaching, psychopharmacology, Physician’s wellness, and Positive Psychiatry. He leads the Madison County Medical Society’s innovative program called Physician’s Resource Network that provides free confidential counseling services that support physician well-being, resilience, and growth. He enjoys giving presentations on various topics that make us think.

Dr. Amit Chakrabarty MD, MS

Dr. Amit Chakrabarty is a Board certified urologist at Poplar Bluff Urology. He received his medical degree as a best medical graduate with honors in Anatomy and Surgery from MKCG Medical College in Berhampur, India in 1980, and his Master of Surgery degree from Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, India in 1984. He did his fellowship in Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) at Edinburgh in 1987. He completed his residency in Urology and fellowship in Uro-Oncology (Research) at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan in 1995. He practices adult and pediatric urology in the USA since 1995. 

Dr. Rupen Joshi is a board certified Internist He is in private practice in Huntsville since 2016 He served as local Alabama API president and served at Chaiman medical staff at Crestwood hospital and served at Crestwood and Huntsville hospital at various committees He is a board member of HCCNA and currently board member of Alabama API He is involved in various fund raising for AAPI and HCCNA
